Profile: Emily Duffill

Emily Duffill

Emily Duffill is an accomplished cellist and pedagogue with over 20 years experience.  A passion for teaching and music education has led her to give lessons alongside her performance activities around the world, such as at the Manhattan School of Music, for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Outreach Program and for the Sydney Conservatorium of Music to name a few.

In 2004 she was awarded the prestigious Fulbright scholarship from the New Zealand government to undertake graduate cello performance study in New York.

A student at the Manhattan School of Music, she focused on orchestral and chamber performance and was lucky to work with several renown conductors and musicians in the classical music world.

At the conclusion of her study she accepted a position with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago where she worked for one year under the auspices of Artistic Director Daniel Barenboim and Chief Conductor Cliff Colnot.

It was during this time that she became increasingly involved in the educational outreach program of the Chicago Symphony - taking tutorials and sectionals and conducting cello master-classes for the Chicago Youth Symphony orchestras. She continues to be involved in such projects - for example, as a teacher and performer for Omnilogy Inc. based in the Philippines. Emily has taught at the Newcastle and Sydney Conservatorium of Music and has a studio of private pupils in Sydney.

This passion for sharing music with children and exploring the potential and benefits of outreach programs in the community led her to work for the Musica Viva In Schools program on her return to Australia.

She also founded Ensemble Link - a company specialising in providing chamber and jazz ensemble entertainment with the intention of increasing performance opportunities and avenues for young musicians who are breaking into the music profession.

Emily continues to teach cello in Sydney and balances this with her entrepreneurial activities and active performance schedule.
